The grit
of the Hormigas
Once upon a time, in a faraway town there lived muchas hormigas.
‘Muchas hormigas’ means many ants. Las hormigas were muy traviesa and tonta (very
naughty and silly) The queen Hormiga was muy bonita and was agradable too. (very
beautiful and nice) Her beauty was not her pride, but her soldiers of ants. She
was extremely supportive and proud of her soldiers. Todos los días she called
out loud – Buenos días mi gente (Good morning people). Las hormigas amaron la queen,
(the ants loved the Queen). One day their town was invaded by hombres – men.
They were cruel men.
Now the hormigas found la vida (life) dificil (difficult).
Getting out of their casas (homes) was imposible - impossible. Even if their cabeza-
head was out to peep, they were crushed to death by those wicked hombres. When
the Queen heard of the atrocities by the hombres, she was enfadada – angry, she
came fuera – outside to see the mayhem. Her Corazon – heart bled. She called
all her soldiers for an urgent meeting. All gathered within minutes. She spoke
in a loud voice, Ahora – Now, we have to make a decision. Como – how to defeat
these hombres. No estara facil – it won’t be easy to fight these hombres. We
have to think of something extraordinary to defeat them. Durante = During the
meeting a pequeña hormiga small ant cried out loudly.
His madre – mother timidly said, ‘Lo siento,’ (I’m sorry) and wriggled her way
out of the meeting hall. Queen had her ojos – eyes on all of them. She smiled
and asked one of the hormigas as to por que - why was el niño pequeño llorarando-
little kid crying. The hormiga said, ‘the hormiga gordo (the fat ant’s) sting
pricked him that’s why esta llorando.” After hearing that all roared with
laughter.
Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve,
diez – the hormigas were lugging the food in the store room. This was their
routine and it helped them to take the food with ease. The mood was sombre and
dull in their kingdom as their outing was completely stopped. The Queen had made
it mandatory that all stay indoors. This was all for the betterment of the
hormigas of the kingdom. The outside world was infiltrated by the hombres –
things weren’t as simple and pleasant as it used to be. Staying indoors was the
only option to survive. Luckily, the kingdom was filled with enough comida –
food, but for how long?
The Queen made an announcement, ‘Amigos – Friends until we don’t
come up with a plan to defeat the hombres, por favor – (please ) do not get out
of the Kingdom, I know many of you will not agree conmigo – with me, pero – but
we have no choice or else moriremos todos - we will all die. Muchas gracias (Thank you very much). This sent
shock waves amongst all the ants. Algunos de ellos – some of them were upset with
the Queen. ‘A veces – At times I wish I could replace this Queen’ said the commander
in chief. De repente – suddenly, in a loud voice the Queen said, ‘Vuelva a
trabajar’ – get back to work. All marched to their respective duties. Entonces,
las días pasio – So, the days passed with uncertainty. The colour of the cielo
(sky) didn’t matter now, the gloom and dismay had entered into the kingdom. Once
it was known to feed hormigas from other kingdoms, but now it was struggling to
make two ends meet, qué pena! (What a pity!)
It was Martes son las ocho en la mañana (Tuesday eight in
the morning); all were summoned to meet the Queen Cuando- (When, the pequeña
hormiga again started yelping. Ahora – now she lost her patience and asked them
to leave the meeting room immediately. dentro de un momento (within a moment)
She empieza reír (starts laughing) Otras peinse that she’s gone loco (crazy).
Despacio – slowly and steadily she clears her throat and said, ‘The solution to
our problem was right under our nose and we couldn’t see,’ she continued, ‘ We all have undermined our
strength, we considered our size to be our biggest flaw, but in reality, that’s
our strength.” The Hormigas were still confused. However, this time her voice
had the confidence.” We are going to go out and make the hombres life one big HELL.”
All of them applauded her for her wit and courage.
The army was ready to attack…Uno, dos, tres and here we
come…The crawled out and straight on the toes and slowly made their way dentro
de (inside) the pants of the hombres. This way the soldiers attacked all the
men and drove them fuera de (out of the) kingdom.) They saw El arco iris (The
rainbow) in the hot summer afternoon. The
voice of the hombres still rings in each and every hormigas las orejas (the ears)
