A mountain to climb

A class of ten students – All came in with different personalities. One of them stood out for her loud persona. That was Sia. The others smirked whenever she entered the classroom. Sia was unaware of what others thought of her. She displayed a tough exterior, but was soft and a kind girl.

In every class, Sia would get called out by her teacher for different reasons. There were days when she would not complete her homework, or she didn’t bring her notebook to class. What surprised the teacher as well as her fellow classmates was how quickly she would come up with some stories. Therefore, it was difficult to believe Sia. She was trapped in her own web of lies.

Today, Sia was rather quiet. The other students too were busy in their classroom activities. Suddenly, the teacher heard some murmur. As usual it was Sia. The teacher asked her what was the issue, she simply smiled and went back to do what she was doing. The other students exchanged glances. The teacher chose to ignore and continued the class. She was extremely happy with the students because it was a productive class; also, none of the students had forgotten their homework; not even Sia. The students left and the teacher continued teaching the other batch. After about five minutes the teacher received a call. On the other side of the phone was  one of the students – Zeina. She was panting and her voice was cracking. Teacher asked Zeina to calm down. Zeina said, “Ma’am Sia stole my ring, it’s an expensive ring and very precious to me.” Teacher was shell-shocked.

Teacher called both the girls to the classroom. Sia was nonchalant while Zeina was fuming with rage. Sia admitted that she had Zeina’s ring, but she said, “Ma’am, Zeina gave the ring to me to wear it until the class got over; however, it was my mistake that I forgot to return it back to her,” Zeina was flabbergasted after hearing what Sia said. Zeina told the teacher that she didn’t give it to her, but rather she stole it from her. Teacher asked both the girls once again, Sia reiterated her side of the story while Zeina’s chain of events kept changing. But with the kind of reputation Sia had, everyone believed Zeina except for her teacher.

The only thing the teacher told Sia was that she would have to work extremely hard to build the trust amongst her peers. Though it’s a long and perilous path, but she will have to walk on them. One can receive love even after betrayal, but it’s not easy to get the trust back once broken. The journey to it was like climbing a mountain.
